Geldings and stallions need to be cleaned, approximately once per year, in order to eliminate "beans." Beans are an accumulation of smegma, oil and dirt. These "beans" not only can cause disruption of proper urinary function but are uncomfortable and have been the cause of performance issues (girthiness, undersaddle problems, kicking and bucking).
Mares need cleaning too and not just between their teats. They actually develop beans in their vulva which can again cause discomfort and performance issues.
