Hearts offers Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) as an alternative form of traditional therapy that addresses mental health needs with the help of one or more equines. An EFP session involves a mental health professional and a credentialed equine professional working with a horse(s) to address psychotherapy goals agreed upon by the mental health professional and the client. Through the support and guidance of the professional facilitators, the relationship with the horse allows a space for the client to reflect, project, and make deep connections. EFP promotes personal exploration of feelings and behaviors and allows for the clinical interpretation of such.
EFP may be useful for individuals with psycho-social issues and mental health needs including:
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Psychotic disorders
- Behavioral difficulties
- Mental illness, such as schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, receptive or language disorders, personality disorders, post traumatic stress disorders
- Significant life changes such as abuse, environmental trauma, grief and loss, etc.
